AI Skills Hub: a useful first step
UK adults can access free online AI training through the government and industry programme. Selected courses meet the Skills England benchmark and provide a completion badge; check the individual listing rather than assuming every course has the same recognition.
Start here for general AI confidence, prompting and introductory workplace skills. Self-paced courses usually use standard examples rather than your own organisation's systems.
North East Growth Hub: business workshops and support
The Growth Hub lists business support and events, including fully funded digital and AI workshops. Its previous Digital Pathfinders programme has included using AI to build a business website.
Check the current events calendar for new dates. Funding, local-authority coverage, business size and trading requirements vary by programme; an old event listing does not mean places are available now.
BIPC North East: advice for a business or start-up
BIPC offers business events, research resources and access to experts, including free support. Topics include starting a business, marketing, intellectual property and digital communication.
Choose an adviser who covers your area and check the appointment terms. Some support is restricted to particular council areas, and specialist sessions may need advance booking.
Skills Bootcamps: a longer learning route
Skills Bootcamps can run for up to 16 weeks and include digital subjects. Eligible individuals may study free, while employers arranging training for existing staff may need to contribute.
For learners seeking new employment, the programme includes an interview offer on successful completion. That is not a guaranteed job. Confirm the course's age, residency, work-status and prior-learning conditions with its provider, along with attendance and completion requirements.
Local colleges: check adult digital provision
Newcastle College advertises free adult courses, including digital skills, with course-specific entry and funding conditions. Other local colleges may also offer funded digital or AI-related programmes.
Do not assume every AI course is free. Age, residency, existing qualifications, income or employment status can affect funding. Ask the provider to confirm your actual fee and equipment requirements before enrolling.
When paid training is the right call
Tailored support can make sense when you need to work on your approved systems and documents, practise tasks for specific roles, record training for governance or procurement, or arrange a particular date for a team.
